Jason Wu for Lancome Violet Streak Color Design Palette

It seems like fashion designers are all jumping on the makeup bandwagon with Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, Michael Kors all venturing into the crowded arena this year. Jason Wu collaborated with Lancome for his first makeup collection, released exclusively at Nordstrom in the US in September. The Color Design palettes included a rich Yves Klein blue shade that is one of Wu's favourite accent hues.

Being a fan of the US version of the Color Design quints, I couldn't resist ordering #403 Violet Streak. The compact is a dull grey that looks distinctly less glamorous than Lancome's usual lacquered black. Wu said in an interview that he felt that the grey would stand out on the beauty floor as no one else was using it for their packaging. Well, it's not exactly eye-catching, is it? Elle.com has an interview with Wu on the collection here.

The clear plastic sheet is helpfully marked with the recommended placement for each shade. There are two sponge applicators, which I do use as they do a good job of laying down the shades. For the beige all-over-base shade, I usually use a fluffy brush for a more subtle, diffuse finish.

Like most of the Color Design palettes, Violet Streak is a shimmerfest. All the shades have good color payoff with a soft velvety texture. When applied, these have a refined glimmer, without any chunky glitter bits or brash frostiness.

The suggested day and night looks that can be created with Violet Streak.

Below is a comparison shot with some of my other Color Design palettes in Vert Tendresse (extreme left), Teal Fury (top centre) and Mint Jolie (right). Violet Streak did not contain any dupes from the other three.

For this look, I applied the grey shade along the upper lashline, the violet blue in the middle of the upper lid and outer half of the lower lid, the light blue at the inner corners and crease, the beige shade over the browbone area and the gold along the inner half of the lower lashline. I finished by lining the upper lid with Dollywink's liquid liner and applying Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Edge Meister F mascara.

The eyeshadows last pretty well throughout more than eight hours of wear when layered over a primer like Too Faced Shadow Insurance. However, the violet blue shade loses some of its lustre and seems to darken over time.

I'm also wearing Armani Lasting Silk Foundation #4, of which I received a sample sachet recently. I used to own this in #5 but #4 is definitely a much better match for my skintone. It worked out much better for me in Switzerland's weather than Singapore. There was shine on my T-zone after about 2-3 hours but other than that, it held up nicely throughout more than 6 hours of wear.

Essence Metal Glam and Beauty Beats Collections

Two new Essence collections just launched over here in Switzerland. The first is Metal Glam for creating glamorous looks in the run-up to the festive season.

The Metal Glam eyeshadows (in 8 shades) are a new addition to the permanent range. The four shades in this collection are part of the permanent line. When swatched, these were less metallic and rich than I had expected so they did not tempt me at all.

The Gold Topper 01 Steel-ing The Scene is a clear polish containing irregular gold flakes for jazzing up any nail polish.

The collection also includes four nail polishes with a metallic finish.

The Stick On Jewels are basically tattoo stickers.

Stick On Eye Liners in gold and silver.

The cream blush 01 Glam-Me is a pretty peachy highlighter with a soft gleam.

The obligatory Highlighter Powder 01 Gold Digger is described as a "light, almost white-gold highlighting powder with a soft cream texture and subtle shimmer pigments gives your face a fresh and glamorous glow". I purchased this and the cream blush, both of which were just under 5 Swiss francs each.

Lipglosses in 01 Petal To The Metal, 02 Best Dressed and 03 Glam-Me.

The second collection is Beauty Beats, a tie-in with Justin Bieber's Believe tour (*GAG*).

Yet another shimmer powder. This one is 01 Swaaag!.

Lipglosses in 01 Groupie At Heart, 02 Eenie Meenie and 03 I'm Backstage. The pale mint lipgloss 03 I'm Backstage was the only product in this collection that looked remotely interesting.

Paperprint manicure in 6 designs. The collection also includes a paperprint manicure transfer solution.

Blush in 01 Groupie At Heart.

Mono Eyeshadows in 01 Baby, Baby, Ooh!, 02 I'm Backstage and 03 As Long As You Love Me.

Essence will be releasing a Superheroes collection of nail products next in November.

Sleek Vintage Romance i-Divine Palette

For this autumn, Sleek offers up the Vintage Romance i-Divine palette together with Antique blush. Being a collector of the i-Divine palettes, naturally I could not pass this up. Ordering from the Sleek website was a breeze and the products arrived swiftly in good condition. I was pleasantly surprised that although the palette retails at £7.99 and the blush is £4.49 in the UK, Sleek charged me £6.66 for the palette, £3.74 for the blush and only £2.42 for postage to Switzerland.

Vintage Romance features a lovely mix of dramatic stormy hues in autumnal tones of plum, burgundy and antique bronze, mostly with a shimmery metallic finish. The city-themed shade names add a whimsical touch in line with the theme.

For the most part, the eyeshadows have good color payoff, apply smoothly with easy blendability and do not result in too much powdery fallout. The most pigmented shade was Love in London (black with silver shimmer) which makes a great smoky liner shade. The only shade that disappointed in terms of color payoff was Bliss in Barcelona (deep purple) which require some layering to achieve an opaque finish.

Worn over a primer, the eyeshadows last well over eight hours with just a tiny bit of creasing at the inner corners.

Antique blush is a sedate dusky rosy brown hue shot through with silver shimmer flecks. This gives a natural tint of tan color to the cheeks without looking like glitter city.

Here are three looks which show the versatility of the palette. For the first look, I used Marry in Monte Carlo at the inner corners, Bliss in Barcelona in the middle of the lid, Love in London at the outer corners and Lust in LA blended in the crease.

The second look was created with Marry in Monte Carlo on the inner half of the lid, Meet in Madrid in the centre, Court in Cannes at the outer corners and Pretty in Paris over the browbone area. .

The third look was a combination of Court in Cannes on the inner half and Lust in LA on the outer half, with Romance in Rome at the outer corners.

Overall, I enjoyed the creative possibilities offered by Vintage Romance. There aren't any crazily loud colors. The burgundy hues like Marry in Monte Carlo can be difficult to pull off on my skintone but I just use these sparingly in combination with the other shades to avoid the look of an eye infection.
