Maldives Trip Part 2: Malé
On our first day in the Maldives, we took a day trip out to the capital city, Malé, which is just 20 minutes by speedboat from Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru. Malé is one of the smallest capitals in the world with a population of 130,000.

The special jetty reserved for use by VIPs.

The Republic Square next to the jetty.

The main mosque.

The monument of Maldives.

Inside Sultan Park.

One of the many bats hanging from the huge banyan tree in the park!

The local fruit and produce market by the port.

Thought this was a fruit but it turned out to be chillies!

Barracuda and red snapper on sale at the local fish market.

Swordfish.

The fishing boats.

At both the airport and outside one of the government buildings, we saw these signs proclaiming the Maldivians' solidarity with the Japanese people. The tour guide told us that they had just raised half a million dollars through a 36-hour telethon for Japan.
