2015 Year in Review

With just the last few hours of 2015 left to go, I thought I'd do a quick wrap-up of this year. It's been a fruitful year with quite a bit of travelling and settling down to life in a small town where there isn't any MAC counter within 100 miles. It's a quiet life but still pretty entertaining thanks to having a hyperactive toddler who is learning to talk and developing in ways that continue to surprise all the time.

January - We had just moved back to Singapore, after 3 years in Geneva. My son also started walking so he was a busy little beaver exploring all the playgrounds in Singapore.

February - Visited my brother in the UK and spent Chinese New Year there.

March - Moved to Urbana, Illinois, and caught the first sakura blooms of spring.

May - One of the nice features of our town is the abundance of parks, so this was our favourite daily activity with my son 'driving' along in his Mini Cooper.

June - Back to the UK to visit my mother and brother before returning to Singapore for the summer.

July - We were supposed to visit Tokyo but had to cancel it at the last minute as my son had a febrile seizure after spiking a fever. The few hours that he spent at the NUH ER were the scariest hours of my life. Fortunately, he recovered within a few days.

August - Returned to Urbana for the new school year.

September - Made our first road trip to Chicago, which is an arduous 3 hour drive away. Discovering the Kinokuniya and Mitsuwa supermarket in Arlington was the highlight of the trip for me.

October - Celebrated the little tyke's second birthday and found out that we were having twins. Think my first words were 'Holy s***'. As they are identical twins, I have to go for scans every two weeks. Thankfully, it's all been smooth sailing so far.

November - Another road trip to Chicago, which coincided with the first snowstorm of the season. In anticipation of the twins, we purchased a Toyota Sienna, which turned out to be awesome as the DVD player keeps my son entertained for hours with his favourite Pocoyo and Paw Patrol cartoons.

December - Enjoying his first Christmas tree, and the abundance of presents from his doting grandmother. He's also become a chatterbox, including often talking in his sleep. Favourite phrases include 'oopsie!', 'no thank you', 'nope', 'oh no!' and 'more biscuit!'.

Blogging-wise, I'm glad that I've managed to keep this little blog humming along, however sporadically. Many of my favourite bloggers have quit or gone on a long hiatus. Instagram is where most people seem to be drawn to these days, and it's certainly the go-to resource for sneak previews of upcoming collections. Nevertheless, I still prefer reading an in-depth thoughtful blogpost over a photo that has been filtered and hashtagged to death. All those artfully arranged flatlays with their random flower petals do nothing for me at all.

My makeup purchases have reduced significantly this year, partly due to the constant moving. The department stores in my town only carry Estee Lauder, Clinique and Lancome, so it's really quite sad but luckily there is Sephora and Ulta. I do most of my shopping at the latter two as most US drugstore brands hold little attraction for me compared to their Japanese and Korean counterparts which are light years ahead in terms of quality and innovation. I've culled a significant amount of old and expired makeup, but my stash is still far from a manageable size. Suqqu has pretty much taken over my daily routine in terms of eyeshadows, while I rotate through a variety of cushion foundations. There is still the constant temptation to try out new products, especially foundations, but I have much less excuse to do so now that I seldom write reviews to justify the purchase. It'll always be a constant struggle to balance it all, but I hope to do better in 2016 by using up more of what I have.

Here's wishing you a wonderful year ahead filled with love, beauty and happiness!

Bath & Body Works Semi-Annual Sale Haul

I've been pretty good at staying out of Bath & Body Works since the last Semi-Annual Sale in June but their latest SAS pulled me in again. This time around, I stocked up on 3-wick candles that were either 75% or 50% off. Stacked with the $10 off $40 coupons, this meant that they ended up costing around US$4.30 to US$8.75 each, compared to the usual price of US$22.50 (versus S$32 in Singapore). These should last me well until the next SAS.

The London candle with its comforting tea and lemon aroma turned out to be a surprise favourite, so I quickly got back-ups of it at the nearby BBW outlet store, which has much more stock of past seasonal releases compared to the BBW at the local mall. This burns evenly with a great throw, plus it came with a festive glittery lid.

Being a sucker for tea scents, the Stress Relief set (US$15.33 after discount) was another instant keeper. This range rarely goes on sale unlike their candles and hand soaps.

Finally, I also picked up a couple of the holiday Scentportable holders which were going at half price.

Urban Decay, Becca, Stila and Physicians Formula Sale Haul

The Urban Decay Vice 4 palette is currently marked down to US$39 from US$60 at several US retailers including Sephora and Ulta, so I finally picked it up. With the Ulta 20% off prestige brands coupon for Platinum members, this ended up costing just $31! Perhaps Urban Decay over-estimated the demand for this palette, and hence the deep discount just a couple of days before Christmas.

The Vice series is one of my all-time favourites for their vibrant shade combinations with Vice 4 being possibly the most gorgeously constructed with its multi-hued metal packaging. However, given the plethora of reviews that warned of glitter fallout, it did not seem to justify the original price tag of $60. Moreover, I was less than impressed with the last Vice Limited palette. But for half the original price, it's just too good of a steal to pass up with its veritable smorgasbord of 20 shades.

At Ulta, I also picked up the Becca Radiant Glow Collection which comes with a full size Raspberry/Opal Lip Shimmer Souffle, plus deluxe sample sizes of their popular Moonstone Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed, Opal Shimmering Skin Perfector Spotlight in Opal and Under Eye Brightening Corrector. With the 20% discount, this was just $25.60, a pretty good bargain considering that the Lip Shimmer Souffle usually retails for $25 by itself.

The Stila Shimmer & Shine Deluxe Beauty Set ($20 with a $45 value) is another attractive set of minis of their Magnificent Metals Foil Finish Eye Shadow in Pixie Dust, Huge Extreme Lash Mascara and Lipglaze in Kaleidoscope. I also purchased the Got Inked Cushion Eyeliner in Smoky Quartz Ink and Rimmel The Only One Lipstick in Peachy Beachy ($6.99). Although I've been an Ulta Platinum member for over half a year, I've never received any of their 20% off prestige brand coupons (which are sent out randomly and never to all Platinum members) until this holiday season when they sent me two mail coupons and one email coupon code. I'll probably use the final remaining code to order the new Stila Aqua Glow Serum Foundation.

CVS was running a buy 1, get 1 75% promotion off all Physicians Formula products so I snagged the new Mineral Wear Cushion Foundation SPF50 in Light ($16) and Disco Glam Extreme Shimmer Strips ($12). The PF foundation was supposed to have a $4 instant rebate coupon on the box but this was missing. Fortunately, the cashier was nice enough to enter a store coupon so I received the discount. Elsewhere, these have been sighted with $9 rebate coupons.

Curiously, it is not stated anywhere on the packaging where this is made. The usual suspect would be Korea, given that this has the standard SPF50 seen in many Korean cushion foundations. The cushion plastic insert cannot be removed.

This haul helped to kick me out of my recent funk in which I've just been too lazy and exhausted to slap on anything aside from a cushion foundation, brow liner and mascara. I'm 22 weeks along now with the twins and already can't see below my massive bump. The twins are also kicking away merrily every day. At least I'm almost two-thirds of the way through. Just hoping I can hold them in till 37 weeks and avoid any time in the NICU.

Wishing you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas!
