Masukawa Tsubasa False Eyelashes Tutorial

More magazine has a tutorial on applying false eyelashes by Masuwaka Tsubasa who is famous in Japan as a model for Popteen magazin. Tsubasa also has her own Dolly Wink line of false eyelashes and other eye makeup products, which can be found at the "Kawaii Corner" in Watsons in Singapore. Tsubasa prefers a doll-like look so she draws the eyeliner such that the outer corner extends downward.

The Dolly Wink line and Tsubasa's makeup pouch (I spy the Paul & Joe x Alice in Wonderland blotting sheet case in there!).

Tsubasa's staple eyeshadow palette is Bourjois Effet Lumiere #41. Step 1: Apply the light brown shade ( middle of the palette) all over the eye socket are, taking care not to blend it over too wide an area. Step 2: Apply the dark brown shade (extreme right side of the palette) from the upper lashline to the crease.

Step 3: Apply the highlight shade (extreme left of palette) along the lower lashline. Step 4: Use the black pencil liner to line the upper lashline, filling in the spaces in between the lashes.

Step 5: Use the Dolly Wink Liquid Eyeliner in Deep Black to line the upper lashline and extend the outer corner to slightly past where the false eyelash is expected to end. Using the liquid liner over the pencil liner helps to make the liner last longer and look more intense. Step 6: Attach on the Dolly Wink eye lash No. 1.

Step 7: Apply mascara but be careful not to over-do it so as not to look scary! Tsubasa uses Lancome Oscillation mascara. Step 8: Use a heated eyelash curler to enhance the curl of the lashes.

Step 9: Attach Dolly Wink eye lash No. 5 to the lower lid, starting with the inner corner. Do not apply mascara as that makes it look more unnatural. Step 10: Apply a highlighting powder under the eyes. Tsubasa uses Candy Doll Premium Lamé Glitter (Champagne).

On the cheeks, Tsubasa used a light pink blush mixed with orange for a glowly summer look. And finally, for the lips, she used an orange-tone concealer to suppress her natural lip colour before applying an orange gloss for a milky finish.

Hope this has been helpful!

Maquia Fresh Smokey Eye Tutorial

The April issue of Maquia has an interesting makeup tutorial on how to update smokey eyes for spring by using shimmery soft pastel eyeshadows and brown eyeliner instead of black. The products used in the tutorial are:
1. Lunasol Sheer Contrast Eyes #4 Green Coral (5250yen)
2. Kate Square Cut Eyeliner BR2 (997yen)
3. Coffret D'Or Natural Clear Eyeliner BK28 (1890yen)
4. Clinique Lash Curling Power Mascara 01 (3675yen)

Step 1: Brush the pale yellow shade in the upper right side of the Lunasol quad all over the lid. This will form the base for the gradational look.

Step 2: Use the brush applicator to apply the white shade in the lower right side of the Lunasol quad over the area just under the arch of the brow. Highlighting this area helps to create a more textured finish.

Step 3: Use the brown Kate eyeliner to draw a thick line along the lashline from the inner corner towards the outer corner of the upper eyelid.

Step 4: Use the thin end of the sponge applicator to apply the brown shade in the Lunasol quad just above the liner in Step 3, also following the lashline.

Step 5: Use the fat end of the sponge applicator to blend the green shade in the upper left of the Lunasol quad from the middle of the upper eyelid towards the outer corner.

Step 6: Push up the inner corner of the eyelid with your finger and use the Coffret D'Or liquid liner to line the waterline, i.e. right along the lashline and in between the lashes.

Step 7: Use the fat end of the sponge applicator to apply the white shade in the Lunasol quad under the inner corners of the eyes (to about 1/3 of the under-eye area). This helps to brighten up the eye area.

Step 8: Use the fat end of the sponge applicator to apply the yellow shade from where the white shade in Step 7 ends, all the way to the outer corner of the under-eye area.

Step 9: Use the Kate brown eyeliner to line the outer 2/3 of the lower lashline, i.e. starting from 1/3 of the lower lid (from the inner corner) to the outer corner.

Step 10: Use the thin end of the sponge applicator to apply the brown shade in the Lunasol quad at the outer corners of the lower lid.

Step 11: Push up the outer corner of the upper eyelid with your finger and use the Kate brown eyeliner to line the inner upper lashline, i.e. under the lashes.

Step 12: Similarly, use the Kate eyeliner to line the inner lower lashline.

Step 13: Apply the Clinique mascara, with special emphasis on adding volume at the base of the lashes for a more dramatic look.

Step 14: Finally, hold the Clinique mascara applicator vertically to apply the mascara to each of the lower lashes individually.

And this is the finished look! Do give it a try :-)

Kate's website currently features a "Sweet Manish" makeup tutorial.

Dual Carat BR3 is used all over the eye area followed by using Liquid Eyeliner N BK1 to draw a line about 5mm thick along the upper lash line. The jagged lines along the lower lashline are created using Super Sharp Liner BK1. Designing Eyebrow N BR4 is used to defined the brows, followed by Liquid Eyebrow BR1 to add the finishing touches. Finally, Cheek Color N OR1 is brushed on the apples of the cheeks.

Voce: Airy Matte Skin guide

Voce's October issue had a detailed 15-step guide to creating "Airy Matte Skin" by noted Japanese makeup artist Shimada Chiaki. Matte makeup often tends to look very heavy but the key to "Airy Matte Skin" is a sheer, even application to create a natural, healthy look.

Base
Step 1: Dab small amounts of the makeup base on the forehead, cheeks and chin. Using the length of two fingers, even the base out starting from the centre of the face and moving outwards and also in an upward motion from the jawline.

Step 2: The area around the eyes is prone to oxidisation and it is also an area where many people forget to apply foundation. Using the fingertips, apply the makeup base in a light tapping motion.

Foundation
Step 3: Using your third and ring fingers, apply liquid foundation from the centre of the face towards the outer edge and also from the bottom upwards.

Step 4: Use a sponge in a rolling motion across the face to lift off excess foundation/oil.

Concealer
Step 5: Use a brush to apply concealer in a triangular area under the eyes from the inner corner to the outer corner.

Step 6: Use your finger to smoothen out the concealer in a light pressing motion for an even finish.

Step 7: Use your finger to apply a light layer of concealer on the upper eyelids.

Step 8: Use a brush to apply an illuminating concealer at the inner corners of the eyes and then use your finger to even out the application.

Step 9: Use your finger to apply a light layer of illuminator along the T-zone from between the eyebrows to vertically down the centre of the nose. This helps to create more contrast between the various areas of the face so that the face does not look so flat.

Control Color
Step 10: Apply an apricot-toned concealer at the outer and inner edges of the eyes as these are prone to oxidisation.

Powder
Step 11: Before applying loose powder, press the two sides of the powder puff together until the powder can hardly be seen. This helps to ensure an even application.

Step 12: Apply the loose powder using the powder puff in a gentle large rolling motion from the centre of the face outwards. Do not apply in a direct patting motion.

Step 13: As the eye area is prone to creasing, apply the loose powder on the eyelids using the powder puff in a gentle pressing motion.

Shading
Step 14: Apply a sheer blush on the apples of the cheeks until the area just in front of the ears using a large blush brush

Highlight
Step 15: Applying a light highlighter powder under the eyes using a small powder brush.

Further tips: To ensure an even, sheer application of foundation, do not just use one fingertip. Instead, use the length of your second and third fingers. To prevent creasing of foundation under the eyes, apply a light layer of powder using a powder puff folded in half in a gentle pressing motion.
