FOTD with Sisley, Guerlain and Catrice.

one of the most recent FOTDs where i implemented a "more asian" eyeshadow technique but used a bolder colour to avoid it looking too nice. just tightlining the upper waterline and more black on the outer corners but less colour on the lids and the crease actually. i find that it creates a quite soft but still sultry effect. i also used the BeautyQQ-false-lash-application-technique that i have showed you here.
what do you think? do my eyes look bigger than normal at all? as this might be one of the most important goals in popular asian make up application: fair and even skin, big eyes, dolly cheeks & lips.

for the face - quite spartan ;)

foundation: Sisley Phyto Teint Éclat in #1 Ivory (1 - review) applied with the fingers (!) - not on the pic ;)

concealer: Giorgio Armani Master Corrector in #2 (2) applied with the fingers again (!) ;)

powder & blush: Guerlain Parure de Nuit (3) applied with SUQQU Face Brush (4)

for the eyes:

brows: Shiseido Brow Pencil in GY901 Natural Black (not on the pic, sorry)

lips: Dior Rouge Dior in #298 Beige Indécise (11 - lip swatch)

eye make up:
  • tightlining the upper waterline with matte black liner shade in Guerlain's #68 Champs-Élysées palette (1 - review) and MakeUpShow Small Shader Brush (2 - review), extending the line a bit on the outer corner of your eye and apply the left-over shadow to the outer part of the lower lashline.
  • sweep a sheer wash of Catrice C'mon Chameleon eyeshadow (5 - review) with Hakuhodo S142 brush (3 - review) onto the lids, blend out with Edward Bess Luxury Eye Brush (4 - review). apply a bit onto the lower lashline.
  • draw a relatively thick liner with Essence I Love NYC Gel Eyeliner (7 - review) along the upper lashline with For Your Beauty Lip Brush (6 - Rossmann brand), meet up with the black on the outer corner but no wing upwards.
  • curl lashes with Koji Eyelash Curler (8), apply 1 coat of Shiseido The Perfect Mascara (9).
  • apply false eyelashes (10) to the outer corners using this technique.

Ha! i've mastered the false lashes!

on my last attempt playing around with fake lashes, i didn't like the results at all. it reminded me of the photoshopped kawaii girls and screamed *phoney* to me. i am very thankful for so much positive feedback from you, though! and when Angie reminded me of how BeautyQQ, a HK based youtuber/blogger that i highly appreciate, applies her falsies to make them look more natural, i wanted to finally do it since i planned to try it for a long time.

BeautyQQ, better known as Queenie Chan is very creative and inspiring. whenever i watch her videos i wished that i could speak chinese - i think that's next on my list for learning a new awesome language, but i need to improve my finnish first haha.
well, yesterday i tried her method, which you can learn here, and i think it turned out amazing! i loved the result and am so glad that i tried it (♥*thank you Queenie! thank you Angie!*♥). it totally changed my view on false eyelashes and now i think with the appropriate length and style of the lashes, i am starting to really like them!

well, here's the trick: you don't stick the strip of falsies on top of your lashline, but UNDERNEATH. so the band and the artificial sheen of the false eyelashes don't reveal you. sounds complicated and uncomfortable, but it is SO easy to do and feels much more comfortable than the "normal" way. i didn't feel anything on/along my lashline already right after applying them, no need for adaption time.

this is all you need:

  • one or two strips of false eyelashes,
  • a pair of scissors to cut them into segments,
  • a tweezer to hold and apply,
  • lash glue (black/dark glue works best),
  • cotton buds to hold and protect your lids and natural lashes and to adjust the falsies.

to make it easier to apply, more comfortable to wear and to look more natural, you should cut the lash strip carefully at the band into 4 or 5 segments.

they should be arranged like this - these criss cross lashes will create a soft fan effect on the outer corner and elongate your eyes slightly. of course you can use more lashes, the more the thicker your lashes appear and the more intense the result. for testing purposes i started with one strip for both eyes.

then take a segment with your tweezer and apply a bit of lash glue to the top side of the lash band, not the bottom side you would use if you'd apply them traditionally. let the glue dry down about 20 sec. so it can become sticky.
use a shield or just a cotton bud to lift your eyelid and hold back your natural lashes gently and attach the lash segment to the roots of your natural lashline, not directly on the inner rim. you can use the cotton bud to press on the lashes and adjust their fit.
continue with the next segment.

these are just examplary, here i already wear the false lashes. please excuse my tired and red eyes.

you need to adjust them if they interfere with your visual field. lift them a bit and they will also lift your natural lashes and open up your eyes even more (even if you have stubborn straight lashes that don't curl well).

here you can see where i attached my lash segments. (and look how poor my real lashes look beneath them ^^)

looking from above, you can't even identify the false lashes. from the curve and the density people might suspect that you wear falsies, but they can't really tell (but only if you choose a natural style and not too long or spiky styles). if you tightline your upper waterline before applying the lashes, they will be even more undetectable.

the results:

they are still a bit artificial looking, but really only the tiniest bit. they blend into my real lashes very well and are not too long. exactly the result that i want in fake lashes.
i still think it's a bit too much effort for everyday, but now i will definitely wear false lashes the next time i go out! i think the result is so natural and wearable that i can pull off this look for less festive events also.
it's such an amazing method and those of you, who thought they couldn't deny the phoney factor of false lashes and because of that never tried them, should really really really try this!

this is how it looks zoomed out:

compare how the same style of lashes look on me when i applied a full strip on the top side of my lashes:

please make sure to watch Queenie's video!
what do you think now? which look do you prefer?

what do you think about false lashes?

i never was a false lashes girl. i am very unsatisfied with my natural lashes which are sparse, short and point straight downward, but i never considered using fake lashes, lash extensions and such sorts to add some impact to my lashline.
reason why: i just think they are much too obvious on my asian eyes. most lashes are too long, too curved and too dense to be able to fake a natural, thick lashline and wearing them would only emphasize on the phoney look. the result is inverted into something one hasn't aimed at all. it always looks fake and obvious. legit.
also, i think the bigger the lashes, the more they absorb from your eye make up, especially if you have small asian eyelids, and there's no real point anymore to put much effort into it. and i love my eyeshadows and eye brushes too much to go back to the basics.
third, i have seen much too many deterrent examples in my youth (i just say friends with one side lashes half off ... they seemed too confident and i was too insecure to tell them - no good for either side).
if it's not for arty looks, or photoshoots that aren't close up, for on-stage performances etc., i just can't become friends with falsies. especially if a person talks directly to me, it makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable wearing false eyelashes, worse than any slutty make up or embarrassing clothing, i would concentrate my insecurity on my lashes - because it's just undeniably obvious from the distance you have in normal everyday interactions. what if they are about to fall off? what if my counterpart stares at my lashes, thinking less of me, my personality, my intelligence? it just pressures me to have to prove myself even more, and that's quite stressing.
i think many women with caucasian eyeshapes look even more beautiful when they have false lashes applied, but i found less than few asian women who can sport fake lashes on a daily basis and don't look awkward.
this is not meant disrespectful or to devalue anyone - each woman chooses what she likes and has an own imagine of herself, it's just not my taste. i even have difficulties to put on fake lashes for festive events. until recently, when a sister-in-law gave me some sets of false eyelashes that she bought during a trip to our home country, i only had two or three pairs of drugstore fake lashes to play around with.
here you can see the result - pretty phoney, right? haven't even dared to go out of the door with them yet.

first i have a set of flared lashes, they are pretty natural, short and fine in the inner corners, but the outer wing is too much, too flirty. here a full face comparison with/without lashes. the difference of course is even bigger since i've only coated my lashes in a super thin layer of mascara.

the other set looks denser and in fact more artificial, but the shorter outer corner makes them look a bit more normal than the other style. this one gives you a more dolly look.

what are your preferences? do you have tips on good and natural looking lashes for asian eyes? i have ordered the Princess Lee false eyelashes to try which are told to be the most natural and undetectable lashes out there, but they haven't arrived yet so i can't say anything about them. i surely have never purchased nicer and more pricey ones such as MAC, Shu Uemura and sorts. i also am curious about individual lashes, half lashes or lash segments. oh, and what's the best glue? i have one bottle of Eyelure and a tube of ModLash glue here. haven't bought Duo glue yet since i am too stingy for only occasional wear but i heard that it's the best.
